Looking to build a sturdy, natural-looking sandstone retaining wall? Here’s a step-by-step guide with some essential tips to help you create a wall that’s both functional and beautiful.

Step 1: Calculate How Many Logs You Need

First, measure the length and height of the wall you want to build. For example, if your retaining wall is 30 meters long and 2 logs high, the calculation is simple: 30m (length) x 2 rows = 60 lineal meters. That’s 60 x 1-meter logs or 30 x 2-meter logs. Make sure to choose the right log size to fit your design.

Step 2: Choose Between A Grade and B Grade Logs

A Grade (left), B Grade (right). Note: these are just examples, colour varies drastically depending on when logs are cut.

Next, decide if you want A Grade or B Grade logs. A Grade logs are more uniform, making installation faster and easier, but they are more expensive. On the other hand, B Grade logs have a more rustic appearance, with some imperfections such as chips or varying depths. You can still achieve an A Grade look by placing the best face forward, but it’s wise to have an experienced installer to bring out the best finish.

Step 3: Secure Your Logs Before Starting

It’s important to have your sandstone logs on site before excavation begins. Quality sandstone logs can sometimes be hard to source, and delays could slow down your project.

Step 4: Prepare the Site and Lay the Foundation

Excavate the site, ensuring the ground is level and compact. You can use a layer of crusher dust to provide some flexibility when setting your first row of logs. A string line can help ensure the wall is straight as you install your first row.

To strengthen the structure, consider turning one log into the wall, leaving the exposed end at 500x500mm. This allows you to stagger the logs like bricks, which enhances the strength of your wall. Alternatively, you can cut a log in half to achieve this staggered look.

Pro Tip:

Use your more imperfect logs on the bottom row and ensure the best side faces out. Any imperfections at the back of the wall will be hidden once the wall is backfilled.

Step 5: Ensure Proper Drainage

Good drainage is essential for any retaining wall. Lay an agg pipe (agricultural pipe) along the back of the wall to allow for proper water drainage. You can also add geo-fabric to prevent dirt from seeping through the cracks.

If your wall is in an area prone to water buildup, adding a layer of crushed sandstone or crushed concrete behind the wall can help improve drainage.

Step 6: Complete the Top Row

For the final course, use your best logs on the top. This way, when looking down at the wall, the rows will appear neat and uniform.

Once the top row is in place, you’re ready to finish the project. Consider adding non-invasive plants to the top to help the wall blend into its natural surroundings.

Bonus Tip: Add Steps

Sandstone steps can add a functional and aesthetic touch to your retaining wall. Sydney Sandstone Blocks Suppliers offers diamond sawn steps that perfectly complement sandstone retaining walls.

Why Sandstone Retaining Walls Are a Popular Choice

Sandstone retaining walls are a natural, cost-effective alternative to concrete block walls. Plus, in most cases, you won’t need a concrete footing, making the installation easier and more affordable. The natural beauty of sandstone offers a timeless, earthy look that manufactured walls can’t replicate.

Happy wall building!

Please note: While this guide provides helpful tips, we always recommend using a professional installer for the best results and to ensure your wall meets local regulations.
